Your Origin

Are you Jewish? Do you have Jewish roots? Are you an Ashkenazi? Are you a Levi or a Cohen?

There are certain genetic traits that are indicative of Jewish ancestry. With a DNA-Test by iGENEA, your DNA-Profile can be examined for these traits. Bearers of the same or similar genetic traits are categorized in haplogroups. Membership in certain haplogroups can be indicative of Jewish ancestry. Furthermore, there is a certain DNA-Profile called the "Cohen Modal-Haplotyp", because it appears repeatedly among the Jewish sub-group called the Cohanim. This haplotype is a clear indicator of Jewish ancestry. Even if you don't belong to one of the typical Jewish haplogroups, you could still have Jewish roots. By comparing your DNA-Profile with all other profiles in our databank (over 240,000), you will find persons whose profiles are genetically similar to yours ("genetic cousins"). If many of your genetic cousins are Jews, then there is a high probability that you have Jewish roots.

Is Judaism more than a religion? Is there a Jewish Gene?
According to halakic law, anyone who is born of a Jewish mother or converts to Judaism is a Jew. The tight connection of culture, tradition, religion and ethnicity evinces itself especially among Jews. Jews developed over the centuries a certain degree of genetic homogeneity that becomes visible in a DNA-test. The DNA-Test is available from € 99.

For men: we recommend the Combined Plus Test for € 299 (Euro), which answers the question of a person’s descent in the maternal and paternal line. You will receive a written report containing information on your primal people, your country of origin and your haplogroup on both paternal and maternal side as well as access to the iGENEA database for an unlimited period.

For women: we recommend the mtDNA-plus Test for € 149 (Euro), which answers the question of where a person comes from in the maternal line. If as a woman you would like to have your paternal lineage tested, the involvement of a male family member is required (why?). This can be the father, uncle, brother, grandfather or cousin on the paternal side.

Here is how it works:

Step 1: Mucus Sample

A Mucus Sample suffices to get a sample of your DNA. Taking the sample is simple and painless and can be done at home.  Your return the sample to us with the envelop included in the sampling kit.

Step 2: DNA-Analysis in the Lab

By isolating your DNA, we can now examine your Y-Chromosome and your mitochondrial DNA.

Step 3: An interpretation support of your genetic data.

In 6 to 8 weeks, you will receive the first results and access to the database. Your genetic data will be evaluated by iGENEA's team of experts and your origins interpreted. With this interpretation support, you will learn of your origins in three different epochs: Pre-history, Antiquity and the Middle Ages. The Haplogroup shows your origins in Pre-history. The Antic People show your ancestry in Antiquity (900 B.C. - 900 A.D.). The region of origin shows, where your ancestors lived between the 11th and 13th centuries.

You will receive:

Your personal certificate with your profile and an interpretation support of your genetic origins

Online Result

Y-certificate

MT-certificate

File folder

Your personal iGENEA-Online result, where you will receive explanatory materials concerning your antic people group, your haplogroup, as well as graphics, animations and guides for your own research into your genealogy and origins. Depending on your genetic profile a clear categorisation within an antic people is not possible. In this case, all possible folk will be listed.
