Here, where I am in the South East of England, it is as if this subject I write about, just get worse by the day and it has no age limit. It has become crucial that we as Christians need to learn and understand what the Bible say of our day-to-day lives and how to implement it. Let us then take a individual look at what the Word of YAHVEH say about this.
DRINKING
WHAT WARNINGS ABOUT DRINKING ARE IN THE BIBLE?
DRINKING CAN LEAD TO MANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES.
“One day he became drunk on some wine he had made and lay naked in his tent.” (Genesis 9:21) Noah, the great hero of faith, got drunk; a poor example of godliness to his sons. Perhaps this story is included to show us that even godly people can sin and that their bad influence affects their families. Although the wicked people had all been killed with the great flood, the possibility of evil still existed in the hearts of Noah and his family. Ham’s mocking attitude revealed a severe lack of respect for his father and for YAHVEH.
DRINKING IS ONLY A TEMPORARY ESCAPE.
“Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks.” (Proverbs 23:29-30) The soothing comfort of alcohol is only temporary. Real relief comes from dealing with the cause of the anguish and sorrow and turning to YAHVEH for peace. Don’t lose yourself in alcohol; find yourself in YAHVEH.
THE BIBLE IS CAUTIOUS ABOUT THE USE OF ALCOHOL.
Israel was a wine-producing country. In the Old Testament, winepresses bursting with new wine were considered a sign of blessing (Proverbs 3:10). Wisdom is even said to have set her table with wine (Proverbs 9:2, 5). But the Old Testament writers were alert to the dangers of wine. It dulls the senses; it limits clear judgment (Proverbs 31:1-9); it lowers the capacity for control (Proverbs 4:17); it destroys a person’s efficiency (Proverbs 21:17). To make wine an end in itself, a means of self-indulgence or as an escape from life is to misuse it and invite the consequences of the drunkard.
THE BIBLE OFFERS A POWERFUL ALTERNATIVE TO DRINKING.
“Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let the Holy Spirit fill and control you.” (Ephesians 5:18) Paul contrasts getting drunk with wine, which produces a temporary “high,” to being filled with Ruach HaKodesh, which produces lasting joy. Getting drunk with wine is associated with the old way of life and its selfish desires. In HaMashiach, we have a better joy, higher and longer lasting to cure our depression, monotony or tension. We should not be concerned with how much of Ruach HaKodesh we have, but how much of us Ruach HaKodesh has. Submit yourself daily to His leading and draw on His power.
WHEN IS DRINKING WRONG?
Ephesians 5:18: “Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, let Ruach HaKodesh fill and control you.” Exodus 32:6: “The people got up early the next morning to sacrifice burnt offerings and peace offerings. After this, they celebrated with feasting and drinking and indulged themselves in pagan revelry.” Proverbs 23:29-32: “Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks. Don’t let the sparkle and smooth taste of wine deceive you. For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like a viper.” Drinking is wrong when alcohol influences our actions.
I’M ADDICTED TO DRINKING AND I’VE HURT MY FAMILY. CAN YAHVEH HELP ME?
2 Corinthians 5:17: “What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!” 1 Corinthians 10:13: “Remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And YAHVEH is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it.” YAHVEH is willing to help all who are trapped by addiction if they will humbly call upon Him.
DRUGS
WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT DRUGS?
1 Corinthians 6:12-13: “You may say, ‘I am allowed to do anything.’ But I reply, ‘Not everything is good for you.’ And even though ‘I am allowed to do anything,’ I must not become a slave to anything. Our bodies... were made for our Adonai and our Adonai cares about our bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Or don’t you know that your body is the temple of Ruach HaKodesh, Who lives in you and was given to you by YAHVEH? You do not belong to yourself, for YAHVEH bought you with a high price. So you must honour YAHVEH with your body.” 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of YAHVEH.” The Bible doesn’t talk about drugs as we know of them today, but it does talk very specifically about not putting things into our bodies that are harmful or that are not glorifying to YAHVEH. Taking drugs is trying to get a “high”; a feeling of ecstasy and satisfaction that is a cheap substitute for the incredible feeling that comes when we allow Ruach HaKodesh to control our lives. When Ruach HaKodesh controls our lives, we not only feel incredible, but others are helped as well.
WE ARE TOLD THAT EVERYTHING IN MODERATION IS OKAY. CAN’T THAT APPLY TO DRUGS, TOO?
2 Peter 2:19: “They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves to sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you.” Whatever has control over you is your master. If YAHVEH is your Master, He will raise you up and encourage you, but the master of drugs will only tear you down and make you a slave to its addictive power. |
